-There are the more than 12000 species of ant all over the world.
-an ant can lift 20 times its own body weight. If a second gender was strong as an ant. She would be able to pick up a car
- Some queen ants can live for many years and have millions of babies.
- Ants don’t have ears. Ants ‘hear’ by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet.
- When ants fights, it usually to the death.
- When foraging, ants leave a pheromone trail so that start a new nest.
- Queen ants have a wings, which they shed when the start a new nest.
- Ants don’t have lungs. Oxygen enters through tiny holes all over the body and carbon dioxide leave through the same holes.
Although ants are frustrating when the get into your home or when you are on picnic. Ants do help the environment. They are social insects. Which means they live in large colonies if depending on the special. ants colonies can consist of millions of ants. There are three kinds of ants in colony. The queen, the female workers, and males.
The queen and male have wings. while the worker don’t have wings. The queen is the only ant that can lay eggs. The male ants job is to mate with the future queen ants and they do not live long afterwards. Once the queen grows to adulthood. She spends the rest of her life laying the eggs. depending on the species. A colony many have one queen of many queens. Ant colonies also have the soldiers that protect the queens. Defend the colony. Gather or kill food, and attack enemy colonies in search for food and nesting spaces. If they defeat another ant colony, they take away eggs of the defeated ant colony.
When the eggs hatch, the new ants became the ‘slave’ ants for the colony. some jobs of the colony include taking care of the egg and babies. Gathering food for the colony and building the anthills or mounds.
Large, shiny black ant that is more active in the early evening hours.
Carpenter ants excavate galleries in wood and are considered wood destroying organisms because of this habit. Carpenter ant colonies are usually constructed in area with excessive moisture, such as areas where your roof or pipes have leaked.
Colonies are difficult to locate because they are located in difficult-to-reach- sites and are often supplemented by separate, smaller satellite colonies (sub-colonies away from main colony).Foraging ants are regularly seen in homes and building but this does not necessarily indicate an active carpenter ant infestation within the structure. Many times carpenter ants foraging within homes are originating from outside sources, such as woodpiles and tress.
BIOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR:
These are large, black, shiny ants ranging between ¼ and ½ an inch long.
Polymorphic: Meaning ants of the same colony can vary in size.
Excavate galleries in wood but sues not use the wood as a food source.
Chewed up wood pieces and dead insects indicate presence of nests.
Carpenter ant nests are found in areas of excessive moisture or water leaks.
Can be found in solid, sound wood but prefer water-damaged wood.
CARPENTER AND PREVENTION TIPS:
Identify nests location. Nighttime inspections are best.
Keep shrubs, vine and tree limbs trimmed away from the structure.
Mulch should be less than 3 inches deep and gravel perimeters around a structure are best.
Remove garbage daily and store refuse holding containers outside.
Fill window and door frame gaps, utility opening and cracks with sealant.
Remove leaf litter and yard wastes from around a structure’s foundation.
Don’t stack lumber, firewood, bricks or other debris next to the foundation.
Treat plant-feeding insects with an appropriate insecticide.
Wash ant-trails with a mild detergent to eliminate to element pheromone cues left for other ants.
Life cycle of Cockroach
Many pests have only become a problem as a result of the direct actions by humans. Modifying these actions can often substantially reduce the pest problem. In the United States, raccoons caused a nuisance by tearing open refuse sacks. Many householders introduced bins with locking lids, which deterred the raccoons from visiting. House flies tend to accumulate wherever there is human activity and is virtually a global phenomenon, especially where food or food waste is exposed. Similarly, seagulls have become pests at many seaside resorts. Tourists would often feed the birds with scraps of fish and chips, and before long, the birds would rely on this food source and act aggressively towards humans. Living organisms evolve and increase their resistance to biological, chemical, physical or any other form of control Unless the target population is completely exterminated or is rendered incapable of reproduction, the surviving population will inevitably acquire a tolerance of whatever pressures are brought to bear - this results in an evolutionary arms race.
Latest Technology (Gel Application)
In the recent past a new technique has been developed which involves controlling the Major cockroach population within the premises by applying a gel like substance. Unlike in the past, it does not require spraying those pungent smell insecticides. The biggest advantage is that there is no need to empty out the whole kitchen and create a mess. So there’s minimal disruption of the home or work place.
The mode of action involves applying low dosages of newly developed molecule called “Fipronil” at strategic location and hide-out places inside the house .This contains a Bait to which cockroaches get attracted and feed on it. Once a critical numbers of cockroaches have accepted this bait, they start contaminating other cockroaches and a cascading effect starts taking place and gradually the whole population of cockroach gets infected by the toxic ingredient present in the bait and ultimately gets eliminated.
The gel is odorless. It can be safely applied to sensitive areas such as electrical console boxes, kitchen appliances, electronic Gadgets, behind the refrigerator etc. on which those conventional insecticide cannot be sprayed. Moreover It is safe, non-irritating and presents no hazard to the living environment.
However as an supplement to the above treatment, the drains, Shaft areas, Sanitary inlets and outlets, Manholes and other utility areas of the building outside the house are sprayed using safe and effective Insecticides.
The scientific study shows, if applied Judiciously and in a appropriate manner, about 70% of cockroach population gets controlled in about a weeks time. The remaining population gets controlled in three to four weeks. For treating a typical house of about 900 sq. ft. of area it just takes about half an hours time.
